: Hi Gordon,
: In your opinion then, if I had a 420 SS with a rockwell of 45-50 on the C scale with a corresponding UTS of 225 kpsi, is this material softer than a 304 SS with an UTS of 325 kpsi???
: I first question the wear resistance properties.
: Also there have been issues with the material taking a set. As I understand it, the hardness has almost no effect on the modulus of elasticity.
: Can you offer any other sources for these types of inquiries?
Hi Michael
What condition or special treatment has your 304 austenitic stainless steel had? Normally 304 has UTS of around 85 kpsi(much softer than 420). If you have raised the UTS of 304 to 325 kpsi then it is probably harder than the 420! Easiest way to know for sure is to check its hardness.
Regards Gordon
