Dear Mr Vijay first of all you should be clear about ur question there are so many kind of UTs and thermal spray coatings and mension the purpose of testing also. then u can get the most appropriate answer in this forum ok thanks for ur question and welcome to the surface engineering forum |

RE: ULTRASONIC TESTING OF THERMAL SPRAYED COATINGS
Dear Mr.Karunanidhi,
I would like to carry out Ultra Sonic testing on Bearing Areas of a ID Fan shaft to determine good bonding between base and sprayed material. This is what my customer is insisting. Thanks Vijay Deshpande |

RE: ULTRASONIC TESTING OF THERMAL SPRAYED COATINGS
Hi vijaydeshin
You can apply ultrasonic NDT on thermal sprayed coatings; problem is the interpretation of the results. The coatings have multiple boundary interfaces between particles as well as to the substrate, along with porosity, oxides etc. which all tend to reflect a fog of information. If you try this technique you will need to do much testing and calibration. This method is rarely used with thermal spray coatings. Regards Gordon |

RE: ULTRASONIC TESTING OF THERMAL SPRAYED COATINGS
Vijaydeshin,
I do not understand why your customer insists on this test to test the bod strenght of the coating. You should be in the position to advice him to do a full metallorgraphy evaluation instead. Spray the same coating using the same set-up to a specimen which is of the same parent material, send for testing, bond test, hardness test, and microstructure test. Your customer shd be able to accept your proposal. Regards, Alex |
