Dissimilar Metal Corrosion Protection
Hello Group,

Is there a coating solution in order to avoid dissimilar metal corrosion between stainless steel and hard anodize aluminum?

I would like to coat stainless steel nuts with a "non-metallic product" to isolate it from being in contact with aluminum alloy.

I do not have the possibility of simply using plastic washers...

I will appreciate any of your suggestion?

Would Endura coating serie 300 with Teflon seal work for example?

Thank you for your help,

Cheers,

Charles

Hi BELLAMARE

Welcome to the Surface Engineering Forum.

Electrical isolation is important here and the type of product you mentioned could be worth trying. My concern would be with isolating the threaded area of the nut. Is the stud or bolt of the same material and is that also going to be isolated?

Hi Gordon,

Yes, the bolt will be of same material than the nut. The bolt's head of the nut would be insulated from the aluminum by some kind of plastic/fiberglass washer.

I am worried about the aluminum pitting underneath the nut as the structure is exposed to sea-water...

RE: Dissimilar Metal Corrosion Protection
At least electrically isolating nut and bolt from the aluminium should stop any bimetallic corrosion adding to the potential of crevice corrosion around the covered and non-covered areas. I think using anodised aluminium may also help. At this point I'm thinking It would be good to have an expert in corrosion science join the forum :ashamed0002:anybody out there? Happy0193

A product called ECK® is a patented coating for preventing dissimilar metal corrosion. http://www.vannay.com
