Anti-corrosion coating for 409 Stainless Steel
Hi Everyone,
We have a corrosion issue with 409 Stainless Steel casings in a coastal environment. Could anything be done - would a Zinc coating be OK on this material? Thank you for any insight or assistance. |

RE: Anti-corrosion coating for 409 Stainless Steel
Not 100% sure about the specific corrosion type that you will be getting on 409 stainless but typically, coastal corrosion and duplex stainless corrosion areas are coated with Aluminium.
For standard carbon steel coastal application, aluminium is a bit more predictable than zinc and therefore is commonly used on oil platforms etc. For duplex stainless applications, aluminium us used on platforms etc, to prevent crevice corrosion where there is not enough oxygen to get the stainless reacting. Hope this helps. Stuart Milton Metallisation Ltd http://www.metallisation.com |

Hi GlenB
409 had to google that as it was not in my handbook 11%Cr ferritic stainless steel. I'm with Stuart, I would try out aluminium.Hi engr.ahmed to the Surface Engineering Forum. Not sure your post helps GlenB with his question, but probably helpful to those looking for engineering articles. May be best posted as a new thread or in http://www.gordonengland.co.uk/sef/resou...-f-14.html Regards Gordon |
