Hi thierry

Metco type Y metallizing gun must be 50-60 years old, though probably still capable of doing an excellent job. Afraid I don't have access to the gun manual. Failing a response on this forum, I suggest you try your luck with the ASM thermal Spray Email Discussion List
as I know the ITSA have a Historical Collection that has a few Metco Y gun manuals and many of the ITSA members use this email discussion list.

Hi thierry, actually one doesn't need any flow meters to adjust a combustion spray equipment. The flow meters are later devices to the first beginning of TS, just to make the adjustments little easier.
The main parameter is the allowed acetylene pressure or flow velocity restriction by the nozzles.
Typical starting pressure values for any Metco combustion equipment are:
- acetylene 15 PSI
- oxygen 30 PSI
- compressed air 50 PSI
Proceed as follows:
Adjust these values by your regulators (forget the flow meters for a while).
- insert the wire in the gun
- light up and adjust wire feed so you can see the tip
- now play with the oxygen pressure to find out the shortest wire tip (this is the hottest flame)
- then readjust the wire feed to accurate level.
If one tries to maximize the output with higher pressures, the flame will blow out from the gas nozzle.
When a stable situation is reached, one can copy the flow meter readings for next time.
