finishing WC HVOF coating
We have a very large cylindrical part (1400 mm dia) that has been coated with WCCoCr using HVOF. Thickness of coating is appx 500 microns on radius
We need to now grind / machine the coating but dont have access to such a large diameter CG machine
Does anyone have any experience machining WC coatings using CBN inserts / any other tool.
Also, the part is not completely cylindrical, it has a tapered end.
A response shall be appreciated
Regards
Shantanu

3M makes great belts for finishing these coatings. You can set up a modified tool post grinder if you have a big enough lathe to turn it. We have had great success using this setup. As long as your lathe runs straight.....

We thankfully do have a lathe large enough with excellent accuracy and tolerances.. But can we use a belt grinder staright after coating. Dont we need to do any kind of tooling before polishing the coating with a belt grinder? Also, can you give me more details on the 3M made belt grade etc Response highly appreciated

Hi pakalano

Can you please provide photograph of modified tool post grinder and specification of 3M Make Belts to grind HVOF coated tungsten carbide coatings.

Yes you can go directly to the lathe to finish grind. There is nothing you would need to do different than you would if it was done in a cylindrical grinder. The belts come in many widths and lengths, so you can purchase any type of tool post grinder to complete this task.
An example is attached on the link.

As for the belts, check out this link.

Shantanu - see the other post I just did. There is nothing you need to do special to the coating. You will just need your best grinder operator to work with your lathe operator to come up with a recipe for finishing. Every part is different. We have managed to finish parts similar in size to yours within tight tolerance and still obtain a 4 Ra or better.
