Vickers Hardness Tester
Hello Everybody,

We are looking for a new Vickers Hardness tester. We have to follow the ASTM spec for Vickers (ASTM E384). In there is stated that the indention must be 25%-75% of the field of view. For indentions of 21 um diameter, the objective should be 50x or bigger.

We tested a machine with a sample of WC-Co and the hardness is around 1000 HV0.3 (diameter appr. 21 um), but the indentions are just 10% of the field of view with a 50X objective (and an eyepiece of 10X). I searched the internet and these are the standard machines of the main suppliers.

Is there something I missed in the spec? Because it seemed strange to me that 1000 HV0.3 gives a too small indention to evaluate with standard equipment.

Thank you in advance for advice.

Kind regards,
Ruud
