Vicker's Hardness testing complete method for copper(thickness 0.07mm to 0.28mm)
We use to procure copper & silver materials from supplier for electrical purposes with various widths & thickness) mostly we use thicknesses below 0.5mm. Can you please help me how to test vickers hardness for this thickness ranges (like machine, applicable load etc..)

Thanks,
Boopesh

Hi Boopesh

I think yiu will need a Vickers microhardness tester, particularly if you are going to test these soft metals down to 0.07mm thick.

The general rule is - The thickness of the test sample should be equal to at least 1.5 times the diagonal of the indentation. The load to apply will be dependent on thickness and hardness. I would apply the largest load possible for each particular situation. Microhardness testers have a maximum load of 1kgf or on some 2kgf which should be ok for the thicker pieces going down to very much smaller loads to cater for the very thin pieces.

Hope that helps
