Two torches , two coatings - one choice Help!!
I have 2 coatings to spray - Metco 58NS and Metco 73Fns 1

I also have 2 torches - plasmatechnik F4 or a Metco 7m

I would like to use one of these torches to spray both coatings for setup reduction reasons. Which torch would be better suited to spraying both coatings and why?
I personally have experience coating with F4 but none with 7m.

How do these torches compare when it comes to hardware life and servicing?

Any help would be appreciated

Hi J_rock

Can't say which gun will produce the highest quality coatings from these powders, but that both will be capable of meeting aviation standards. I would expect the F4 gun nozzle/electrode to last much longer than 7M's, but with a significant cost differential.

My experience is mainly with 7M type systems, and I would imagine that most people will have an experience bias between F4 and 7M/9M.. So I think you are in a good situation to test the many factors that are required to make a good judgement yourself. Relying on other peoples generic opinions (may not be specific to your specific materials) could be misleading.

A few other factors for consideration:
Cost and life of consumables
Deposit efficiencies
Spray rates
Power/gases use and cost
Quality and consistency
Experience and knowledge of system

It would be interesting to hear other comments. I wonder what Sulzer Metco would make of this question? Big Grin

Thanks for that Gordon, I spoke to Metco who said go f4 or 9m due to 7m's obsolescence.

Hi J_rock

Happy0193 well I suppose you would expect them to sit on the fence. I respect both system types and think its probably 'swing and roundabouts' as to choice depending on powder material used.

Fair enough if your going for a new system, but if you have got an operational 7M, the consumable parts are still readily available, coating capability is not significantly different. I know some still prefer to use old style 7M nozzles in the 9MB gun in preference to the 9M tap nozzles (bear in mind you can not do the same with electrodes).

Sounds good, particularly if you already have good knowledge and experience with that gun type Big Grin
