Thermal spray coatings over carbon fiber substrate
Hi everybody!
Dos anyone know something or have experience about thermal spray coatings over carbon fiber reinforced polymers?? I have a question about the surface preparation, the sandblasting process of the CFRP. Thank you colleagues!

What about cold spraying?
I would think the fibers would heat to much during thermal spraying.

Hi Hector,
I have tried this but very difficult, coating easily peels off!. Just use a lot of cooling and move very fast you are able to get some coating on it! We only cleaned it with alcohol, sand blasting has no positive effect as it is carbon fiber and not a metal, it will only contaminate more. What coating do you want to spray? A Thermal Barrier?

Hi!
Thank you for your time Joris and Alaskangrown! I'm going to spray Babbitt over the carbon fiber. I read an article "Arc spray erosion-resitant coating for carbon fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite substrates" The author mention that is possible to do and with good results.

RE: Thermal spray coatings over carbon fiber substrate
Hi Hector
I usually do coatings on Fiber glass, Carbon fiber, Kevlar, graphite and on many other supports, i did many applications for aeronautical industries and they still use to apply aluminum coatings, both, as electro shielding or wear, there is some tricks in order to obtain a good adhesion, sandblasting with aluminum oxide 120 µm is one of them Best regards Luigi
