Surface Finish of Titanium
Hi

I am trying to specify the surface finish of a bead blasted (Honite 13) titanium component as an Ra (micrometer) value, but am not able to find any information regarding the surface finish of different materials in relationship to different blasting media.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated
Regards
Tim

RE: Surface Finish of Titanium
Why are you blasting it, and how tightly do you feel you need to control the surface? Is this a medical use piece? Aviation or aerospace?

It may be critical to control roughness, or it may be that you just need it clean. Control of roughness through abrasive blasting has a lot of variables that can be played with. For instance 24 grit Al2O3 at 100 psi and 6" standoff might profile a softer carbon steel surface about 0.005", but the same oxide at 40 psi and 6" might only profile the same steel 0.0015 to 0.002". For this reason it is better to specify based upon your need than the capability of a specific media.
