Spraying on old coating
Hi Folks,

I know this is unheard of but thought I would put it out there.

Has anyone ever successfully sprayed over machined thermal spray? In particular Babbitt?

We have a job that has had a very thick build up of Babbitt but there was an area which did not clean up fully (due to poor communication from customer). If we have to re-do the entire job it would be thousands of dollars so hoping there is a way to "Top up" the previously sprayed/machined coating.

Perhaps machine a band then apply bond coat?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Hi Kev

The best solution is to rework the piece, but if you are sure that the bond to base material is well done, you can take the Babbitt wire and with a light torch apply the Babbitt by hand, important is to be sure that there is no oil inside the pore coating.
Best regards
Luigi

Hi Kev

Lots of shops actually take the Babbit wire, and use GTAW welding to touch up ..... sounds strange, but with practice it can work...
