Shangtang Technologies Japan Opens Autopilot Test Ground

SenseTime, the world's most highly valued AI startup, has officially entered Japan and launched its self-driving test ground in Ibaraki Prefecture, Ibaraki Prefecture, Ibaraki Prefecture. Shangtang Science and Technology Testing Park is located near Tsukuba Science City, Japan's famous innovation center. It will be open to local residents and provide transportation services for local residents in the future.
Shangtang Technologies, headquartered in Beijing, China, has an astonishing valuation of $4.5 billion ($30.42 billion) and raised more than $1.2 billion ($8.1 billion) last year. According to Bloomberg, Shangtang Technologies plans to raise more than $2 billion (13.52 billion yuan) in a new round of financing. Alibaba Group Holding, Qualcomm and Fidelity International are major investors in the company.
Prior to that, in 2017, Shangtang Technologies reached an agreement with Japanese automotive giant Honda to cooperate in the development of automatic driving technology. The company's most famous business is object recognition technology, which has been widely used in China's retail, medical and public safety fields.
Shangtang Technologies has only been established for four years, but it is not the only Chinese AI company seeking business opportunities in Japan. Baidu, China's largest search engine provider, has introduced self-driving vehicles into Japan through collaboration with SB Drive, an intelligent bus project of SoftBank of Japan, and King Long, a Chinese automobile manufacturer.
In recent years, Japan has invested heavily in AI and self-driving, hoping to help cope with Japan's ageing and labor shortage. The Japanese government plans to deploy self-driving vehicles on public roads in Tokyo at the time of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. In August last year, Japan had run a self-driving taxi in Tokyo.
