Polymer Coating
Dear Members,

We are ineterested in setting up of Polymer Spraying unit for Rolls. Our primary intentions are for Coating with TEFLON/HALAR or similar products. We understand the coating can be carried out by ELCTROSTATIC SPRAY GUNS and subsequently baking in oven.

Our problem is how do we exercise the above baking procedure when the Roll dia is 1.0 m & 7.0 m in length. Will appreciate if someone can throw some light on the matter.

Thanks
Ehasan.

RE: Polymer Coating
Hi ehasan

All of the companies I know that treat similar sized rolls, just use very large ovens. It would be interesting to know if anybody does this by traversing a localised heating source like flame, induction, infra-red etc..

RE: Polymer Coating
Polymer coating by thermal spraying is around a decade long practice used maily as a corrosion barier layer, sometime in conjunction with Zn /Zn-Al powder. In my book on 'Surface Wear-Analysis, Treatment, and Prevention' ASM-International,2001, a complete section is devoted to polymeric coating from basic principles, types, applications and coating properties. In thermal sprayings, some of the polymeric materials need bond coat.Polymeric powders for thermal spraying are manufactured by cryogenic grinding.
Large numbers of applications using different coating processes, such as thermal spraying,co-polymerisation, parylene coating by vacuum plasma etc are dealt with my second book entitles as 'Advanced Thermally Assisted Surface Engineering Processes", Kluwer Academic Publishings, (now taken over by Springer),2004(e-book is also available)??
Just like other big cylindrical jobs, such as, Yankee Dryer, the??automated coating procedure for thermal spraying need to be developed.

Once again the 'Old Fart'; has an opinion:
Please, imagine that the roll size is something around D 2000 x 10 000, as the largest drying cylinders are nowadays in the paper industry.
The ' plastic coatings' doesn't give any increase in corrosion resistance, unless the base coating can do it.
So far no attempts to cure PTFE and any equivalent by light emission has not been successful - yet.

Only further comment is that get in contact with someone who has the appropriative furnace and, the most importing thing, understands what you are talking about.

Hi Ehasan,

Have you heard of a company called Surface Engineering Ltd? I've had similar difficulties in the past and they were able to help me. It's only a small company but they are very friendly. They have a website; (link dead)

Hope they can help you too
Pete
