Niobium Carbide

I am a research student at the University of Michigan Dearborn. We are conducting research related to plasma spraying.

Can anyone help with any preferable particle size or parameters for spraying NbC, and or ,Tantalum Carbide with a Praxair SG100 plasma gun?

Hi Nick

Welcome to the Surface Engineering Forum.

I have no experience with these particular carbides or with the praxair gun. Typically though, particle sizes would need to be around the 45 micrometres. Most carbides are usually employed as composites or cermets like tungsten carbide/cobalt and chromium carbide/nickel-chromium as the pure carbide coatings tend to have poor properties or degrade rapidly during spraying.

We have been getting close to some sort of useable coating with the carbides at very high temperatures (>3000 dgz C), I will keep you posted as we may encounter other issues.
