Molybdenum deposition on copper
Hello to All,

I have to cover copper with molybdenum with an efficiency higher than 90% and the thickness of the layer 60-100 µm.
Can anybody help me with any information ?
Do you know a manufacturer for a mini plasma gun equipment (5-10 kW)?
I have only 10-20 g molybdenum powder. It is a special powder.

Hi Ion

Plasma sprayed molybdenum typically gives 75-80% deposit efficiency. Combustion wire spray will probably get above 90% and may be arc spray.

Hi Ion

Well that will leave only plasma then. Unfortunately the deposit efficiency of your special powder could be anybodies guess, let alone coming up with the best parameters to spray it with. 10-20g of powder will probably disappear just stabilising the feeder.

Hi Gordon,

For sure we cannot use a classic equipment. That is why I have asked for a small equipment.
In order to obtain the parameters I can use normal molybdenum powder.
Do you think that I could modify a plasma cuter (welder) equipment for this purpose ?

Hi Ion,

Typically plasma cutting torches use the magnetic element of the plasma to lock onto the metal substrate being cut. Unless this occurs then the plasma arc will be unstable while 'pilot arcing' (within the nozzle/tip) or stretching. If you were to attempt use of this process then chances are the arc would lock onto the injector/powder port - unless it was ceramic?
Also most of the basic plasma cutting systems are ‘air plasma’ so are not as refined as plasma spray where gases and purity are concerned.

I was contemplating sleeving a generic plasma spray torch nozzle with a smaller ID so that you could downsize the plasma arc?

However both of the above would create unknown plasma properties/dynamics. You may get lucky but I think at best you would be just playing in the sandpit

Still thinking about how you could do this......

Hi Ion

The system appropriate for your specifications could be Cold Spray, which has about 95% D.E., and can be sprayed without oxides, and with a variable powder rate from 2 grams/min to 60, this system is a kinetic basic Spray Process utilizing a supersonic jet of compressed gas, like Nitrogen, helium, etc, and the particles are acelerates up to 1500 m/sec.

Hello Luigi,

I know the system Cold Spray, but the Mo isotope (special powder) has a price > 2000 $/g.
I need to spray <1g/piece (0,6 square decimeter).
I think I need need a mini gun.

The only system that can has a smoller spray gun, with very stable plume conditions and very low spray rate is cold spray, otherwise you must try with PVD system, then you can have a very smoth and low tichness coating, but this kind of system is very expensive, maybe you must send the pieces and powder to someone that has this system
