Metco Super Spray Mask - alternative?
Good morning,

Went to order some of metco's blue goo that we've been using for years, only to find that its been discontinued without any replacement? Seems an odd decision, but i can only assume its not massively used. That being said, we found it extremely usefull on a wide variety of jobs and used it fairly extensively.

Is anyone aware of any other suppliers offering a similar product? (solvent based, good for fine masking against all types of thermal spray) We've currently got about half a can left, which will last us a while, but we're going to need to find a decent alternative eventually.....

Cheers,
Pete

Hey Pete.

I was surprised to learn it was dropped all together. I was involved at the (apparent) end where there was a plan to drop the blue dye and I provided a sample without dye for testing to a large consumer of this product. (By the way, once they learned it was discontinued they bought all remaining inventory from Metco!)

But anyway, back in the day, there was another masking material out there that we only used on particularly difficult parts. It was tan in color, and it may have only been available in pints... I can't remember what it was called but solvent based etc. I think it was more expensive and/or had longer cure time because we only used it on "problem" parts. Back then we were mainly using the Tafa masking compound (the red stuff, and the blue Tafa stuff on Ti parts) but they dropped that several years ago.

If the other stuff's name come to me I'll post it up.

We use a product made from DEWAL that they call Blue Shield .25 BEAD. It holds up to the temperatures produced by APS & HVOF. This might work for you or at least it will give you someone to speak too.

Thanks for that. I'm a big fan of DeWal tapes but was not aware of this 'blue shield' product.

I'm going to look into it myself...
