Metco™ 2042 - CoNiCrAlY-BN / Polyester Abradable
Hello,

I would like to introduce the TopCoat Metco2042 - CoNiCrAlY- for a new customer. Unfortunately, the manufacturer of the powder can not give me any start parameter for the powder at an 3MB burner an an 5 MPE powder feed system. Also the manufacturer can´t tell me the efficiency of the powder. Can someone give me information, please.

Call 516-334-1300 (front desk) and ask to speak to Chris Dambra in CSC. He has that data. I was involved in the development of the material with the Canada office (where it is made) years ago.

He may not be authorized to share it; however if you have purchased the material, he should be able to share. You should also be able to get it from your sales rep.

This kind of coatings generally require a post spray heat treatment, and is a little difficulty to set abradabe powders, because the poly could be lost or burned, I send you a parameter set that worked many years ago, but with the powder feeder 5MPE could be very difficult to set, because fluidified bed is not good for coatings:

Fluidized bed is not good for coatings?!? That's a new one.

Tell that to Pratt Maine- they have 64 (from memory- maybe more) 9MP feeders spraying (gasp) abradables!

This coating can be used as-sprayed but typically it is heat treated to "burn out" the polyester which in that case is a porosity former. Parameters have to be developed and evaluated in the as-sprayed as well as the heat treated condition. Once an as sprayed structure is found, quals can be done that way rather than having to heat treat every qual sample.

It also has applications as an anti-gall coating, similar to CuNiIn coatings on Ti blade roots. In that case, it is typically hvof sprayed and not heat treated, but at the end of the day it's up to the oem to decide how to use it (if at all).

It is very different than good old 601.

It is very different than good old 601.

The key application for Metco 2042 is for rub incursion compatibility vs. Ti alloy blades. In this regard, strict attention to coating hardness is required. It should never be used in the as-sprayed condition (with polymer in the microstructure) particularly for Ti blade applications. A hard rub or risk of Ti fire will result. There is open literature on this material (e.g. ITSC proceedings, ASM Thermal Spray handbook)

9MP fluidised bed and 3MB equipment predate this material. It is best sprayed by 9MB/F4, SinplexPro or TriplexPro for best consistency in terms of hardness and microstructural control.

It is not recommended as an anti-fretting/galling material for Ti blade roots. There is another material, Amdry 958 that is suited to this purpose. It has no polymer in the microstructure . This can either be HVOF or APS sprayed depending on the application.
