Inconel 625 - JP5000
[/b]Hi All,

Has anybody experienced detachment issues when applying over 1.5mm thickness of Inconel 625 (Praxiar 1265)?

We are currently applying through the JP5000 with standard settings and experienced the problem on more than one occasion.

It is the only powder we have this type of issue with during normal spraying conditions!

Any help appreciated.

That coating has a thickness limitation for plasma. never tired it with hvof but i bet it is similar. It really helps if you use a bond coat of nickle if you are allowed

I used a Ni Cr based bond and it worked well with the HVOF, as you say this does have it's limitations due to customers not allowing variations from their specs.

I have attached a photo of a cracked sample:

Hi SDA

Do you have any thermal history for coating and substrate?

What deposit rate per pass? or speeds and feeds?

Maybe just a case of a low thickness limitation, though i would have thought 625 through JP would be higher than 1.5mm. Attention to the above factors may help. Parameter tweaks may be the next thing. Seeing powder and equipment are related I would also seek Praxair advice (You would at least expect them to know there products Rolleyes )

Good luck

Hi Gordon,

We have been running the samples with Mild Steel and laying down about 0.0003" per pass. The coating on the example in the photo pretty much came off in one piece!

I am speaking to Praxair and will let them know the results of my tests, their parameter sheet actually states a thickness capability of 0.100"?

It may be a case of using another powder completely, ideally with similar corrosion properties as Super Duplex..

Cheers

When I was an operator we used the Prax 1265 through the JP regularly different thicknesses and had no issues? Is it the same problem on different components or just the same ones ? Maybe a contaminated substrate ?

Or as mentioned previously try a bond coat we used Praxair 1015.1 (which worked very well)

something like apply 0.010-0.020" (0.25-0.5mm) of bond then 0.040-0.050"(1.0-1.25mm) of top coat

If need be give me a shout and I could maybe help you with parameter adjustments

Cheers

It seems to be more prominent with smaller diameters but we are keeping temperatures below 150 C so I don't think it will be overheating.

I'm thinking it may be Parameter related although they are standard - 6" Nozzle, 15" Stand off, 96g/min, 1850SCFH and 23LPM

Thanks

RE: Inconel 625 - JP5000
Cool your flame. As the molten particle solidify on your part, they contract. As each layer of coating contracts, the stress builds up to the point of failure. It is not necessary to melt Inconel 625 to get it to bond to the surface of your part. That is the basis of HVAF technology. By spraying cooler particles, you will achieve lower residual stresses (even compressive stresses), and you will be able to apply thicker coatings.
