Coatings for aluminium
Hi all,

I have an aluminium component about 150mm by 100mm and about 10mm thick which needs a coating with the following properties:

1) 700-1000 VH
2) coeff of friction of about 0.1 - 0.2
3) operating around 200 degrees centigrade intermittent

Any advice on possible coatings and ideas on cost would be much appreciated.

Regards,

bShah

Hi bshah

To suggest a suitable coating will really require you to give us a lot more information.

Quote:1) 700-1000 VH
This does exclude a large number of coatings, but still leaves many coatings to choose from, but this in itself is not a good critera for selection where thermal spray coatings are concerned. Hardness does not always equate to wear resistance or strength very well.
Quote:2) coeff of friction of about 0.1 - 0.2
This in itself does not mean very much, as environment, couterface material and surface finish are big factors.
Quote:3) operating around 200 degrees centigrade intermittent
This is a very important consideration, but again a very large number of different coatings would be OK.

RE: Coatings for aluminium
Hi Gordon,

Thanks for your reponse. In this application a hardness of 700-1000 VH will give enough wear resistance. The coeff of friction of 0.1-0.2 is desirable against a machined aluminium surface in a mildly acidic environment. The component to be coated is also machined aluminium.

RE: Coatings for aluminium
Hi bshah

I'm sure many could suggest coatings that fit your criteria, may be anodising or a thermal spray coating or other. I would not feel comfortable or confident that any of these potential suggestions would in fact be suitable or not for your actual application. Making a good coating selection can be a difficult task even with detailed information of the application. If you are confident in a coating meeting just your property criteria, try looking at a few coating material catalogues and choose a few that match Rolleyes Are you really confident these will work or be the best selection? Are you really sure a coating hardness of 700-1000 HV will give enough wear resistance or be best for your application? Basically, we need far more information about your application, before we can even think about suggesting a suitable coating.
