Plasma Gas Flow Conversion Formula

Formula for plasma gas flow unit conversion

M1 = Molecular weight of calibrated gas
M2 = Molecular weight of gas flowing
P1 = Pressure of calibration gas in absolute units
P2 = Pressure of gas flowing in absolute units
T1 = Temperature of calibration gas in absolute units
T2 = Temperature of gas flowing in absolute units
F = Direct reading of flowmeter
Q = Standard volume gas flow rate

Molecular Weights of Gases: Air29
Nitrogen28
Argon40
Helium4
Hydrogen2

7MC Flowmeter Calibrated as Follows:
Primary gas flowmetersNitrogen @ 50 psi, 70oF
Secondary hydrogen flowmetersHydrogen @ 50 psi, 70oF
Secondary helium flowmetersNitrogen @ 50 psi, 70oF

Simplify Formula
Assuming T1 = T2 = room temperature

The formula is reduced to:
formula for plasma gas flow conversion

Looking back at the formula note:

- to convert psi to absolute pressure, add 14.7
- to convert oC to K add 273.15
- to convert oF to Rankine add 460

Note that this formula is only valid if there are no obstructions between the gas source and the flowmeter (valves etc.) In the cases of the 7MC system, the formula can be used to calculate the flows through the primary and helium flowmeters only.

To use the measurement conversion calculators simply enter a number value into the desired field and click calculate. All results shown will be equivalent values. Values are given to seven significant figures ( the odd result may show 9's or 0's over running). Values of 10 000 or greater will be displayed in the e-format e.g. 2.3456e7 which equals 2.3456 x 107 or 23 456 000. Values lower than 0.001 will be displayed in the e-format e.g. 2.3456e-5 which equals 2.3456 x 10-5 or 0.000 023456. The calculators require that your browser has java script enabled. View all measurement unit conversion calculators on the same page (may not work with all browsers; requires Iframe).
