Hi Greg
Depends really on nature of the coating you want. I have experience of arc and plasma spraying this alloy, but not HVOF as yet. Gases like oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen do have a significant effect on coating properties. In arc and plasma spraying only argon and or helium gases are used to produce ductile low contamination coatings. Standard spray methods tend to produce coatings with very good bonding properties, but are hard and somewhat brittle in nature due to gas absorption and oxidation.
HVOF should produce good dense coatings, but some oxidation and gas absorption will be difficult to avoid. Argon would probably be a good alternative to nitrogen as a powder feed carrier gas. If using the Metco Diamond jet process you could consider using pure nitrogen instead of air for running the air cap.
Cold gas-dynamic spray or cold spray technology would be advantages here.
