Thermal spray coatings are applied to copper and copper based alloys. The bonding properties to copper though tend to be poorer than to steel or aluminium based substrates. Traditional bond coat or self-bonding coatings like Ni/Al do not work well with smooth copper surfaces, so good grit blast textures are required to hold the coatings.
Copper based substrates are not normally suitable for the hard facing application of fused nickel chromium or cobalt based self-fluxing alloys, as the post fusing temperatures are around or above the substrate melting temperature.
