hardness matching

I'm currently studying the topic of hardness and one question to which i don't find an answer is hardness matching.
If you have one material of a certain hardness, how much damage will it do/undergo from contact (e.g. friction) with another material of a higher/lower hardness.
Also, what hardness difference is acceptable to have equal wear on both parts.
Are there any scales or charts for this, or is this just left to common sence ?
