: : Hi, Gordon
: : I need remelt a thermal spray coating of E309L in substrate of AISI 304 plate, with SMAW process and E309L consumable, but the weld shown low wettability and high penetration, independent of heat input, speed and polarity. How could I improve the welding?
: : Thanks for your help.

: Have you more information on the thermal spray coating? Usually these coatings will be highly oxidised and not really suitable for remelting.

Hi,
Best way to remelt 309L deposit on 304 is to use PTA process using AISI 309L powder consumable with argon plus 5% hydrogen as shielding gas. For
further information on PTA process using powder please refer to my book on "Advanced Thermally Assisted Surface Engineering Processes", published by Kluwer Academic Publishers, Boston in 2004.
