: Can you help? I have been advised that when blasting Ti components with AL Ox that we need to fit explosion relief panels to our cabinets to reduce risk of injury if explosion occurs. Is this the case? we have been blasting Ti orthopedic components for about 17 years without incident, now our service contractor says that we need to fit these panels to comply with ATEX regs. Are they just after our business?

Hi Paul

Titanium dust clouds are potentially very explosive. It is dependent on concentration, particle size, activity etc. If you regularly clean and maintain your system the risk is probably low, but if the concentration of titanium dust is allowed to reach a certain concentration with air then this could be very dangerous and fitting explosion relief panels would reduce harmful effects in the event of an explosion.
