hi,
Another way could be for you to make a slurry of clay of known density in a container. weigh the contents. measure any regular part of your component. now imerse the component in the slurry, take out and allow to dry. weigh the remaining slurry to know how much has been taken by the component. re-measure the regular part of the component and calculate the thickness of deposition as half the difference in diameter. if you take care of shrinkage you will now be able to calculate the surface area by dividing the difference in weight of slurry by the density and the thicness of slurry coating calculated earlier.
