: I am trying to develop a transparent coating onto steel using PVD of titanium oxide. Do you think it works? Are there other materials i can use? Thanks in advance

Hi Kenneth

It depends on what you mean by transparent, invisible or clear to the naked eye or transparent to a specific frequency of electromagnetic radiation. My experience of this is limited, but I would guess that composition and thickness of the coating would be critical to the optical properties.

Off topic a little, titanium dioxide powder is normal white (used as white paint pigment)but the thermally sprayed coating is black! Aluminium oxide powder is white and the thermal spray coatings are also white. Increasing additions of titanium dioxide to aluminium oxide turn the coating from white through blue grey to black. Years ago I found that very curious, I'm still not quite sure why this happens!
