: Hi,
: Can someone tell me how effective is gas-nitrided surface in terms of its intergrity when subjected to fretting?
: Thanks
Hi Meia
Gas nitriding can be effective in increasing fretting resistance in certain situations as can many other surface modification treatments. Fretting is a complex mode of wear, usually where their is no intended motion between surfaces involving adhesive wear followed by abrasive wear in conjunction with corrosion, fatigue and oxidation of wear debris.
The condition of the nitrided surface (white layers, ground finish, hardness etc.), opposing material and lubrication will be important factors to consider.
