: I am building Ipe doors on an historic project at ocean's edge in Pebble Beach, CA. I am having a local blacksmith make reproduction pintle hinges for these doors in stainless steel. The finish should be bronze. He suggested flame-spray bronze onto stainless steel. Is this do-able? The historic hinges in the 'castle' were made of steel by Samuel Yellin, the famous 1920's metalworker, that have been patina'd with a 'black and silver' finish. Perhaps you would suggest another finish more like this period hardware over the stainless stel would be just a durable in the salt-spray and salt-air. Thank You for your quick response. Andy
Hi Andy
Thermal spraying the stainless steel with bronze is certainly possible. Not too sure about the long term life in salt environment though. Will depend on quality of coating and effective sealing.
Can't help wondering why you have not just made them from the traditional material in the first place. It would probably be cheaper in the long run.
