: I have an application in which a small saphire roller (.025" dia) presses against a steel surface with heavy loading (about 10 lb). This causes a permanent dent in the metal as the rollor is slightly embedded.
: My questions are: What would happen if I case harden the steel, and how deep would the hardening need to go? I am hoping to find a condition in which the steel does not undergo inelastic deformation.
Hi Mike
Case hardening could make a big difference in the size of indentation, but it will depend very much on the hardness of your steel at the moment. Difficult to tell if you can get to a condition of no permanent deformation. If your steel is very soft like mild steel and the indentation is minor then your chances are good.
