I have an application in which a small saphire roller (.025" dia) presses against a steel surface with heavy loading (about 10 lb). This causes a permanent dent in the metal as the rollor is slightly embedded.
My questions are: What would happen if I case harden the steel, and how deep would the hardening need to go? I am hoping to find a condition in which the steel does not undergo inelastic deformation.
