: : Does anyone know if there is any type of standard or definition of a coating/film. For example, is it stated anywhere that to be considered a film it has to be 5microns thick and have a certain type of bond? I would appreciate any help I can get on this matter. Thank you.
: Hi Mandy
: The only standard or definition of a coating/film that I have seen is from English dictionaries. Both words refer to a covering. Depending on the industry/discipline it would appear that a film is a thin coating and terms like "thin film coating" and "coating film" are often used! In my field the term film or more usually thin film is usually applied to very thin coatings (a few micrometres or less) like PVD and CVD coatings. At the end of the day it's a coating!
